ONE OF Ireland’s best known actors, and co-founder of the famous Druid Theatre, Marie Mullen, will officially open the 20th Lady Gregory Autumn Gathering in Gort on Friday week September 29.

The highly successful Lady Gregory Autumn Gathering celebrates its 20th birthday in Coole Park, Gort, from Friday to Sunday, September 26 to 28.

Heritage Week, the national celebration of our history and heritage, starts on August 23 and some 60 events will take place throughout Galway city and county during the week. One of the great moments in the 20 year history of the annual Lady Gregory Autumn Gathering, was the arrival Lady Gregory’s two surviving grandchildren, Anne de Winton, and Catherine Kennedy. They drove up the avenue at speed, let their dog out for a run, and came over to the welcoming crowd grinning broadly.

The efforts by a group of local people to have the famous Yeats' Tower (Thoor Ballylee), near Gort, south Galway, reopened is to be welcomed and supported.

There is plenty to enjoy at Coole Park in Gort with walks, family events, and children’s activities commencing on Sunday, July 6, with a guided walk from 2.30pm to 4pm.

On instruction of the receiver, O'Donnellan & Joyce is offering to the market a substantial plot of land which is extremely well located. This land offers a sprawling 61 acres and is situated just off the N18 main road between Galway and Gort. The subject lands are within close proximity of Coole Park.

A variety of events focusing on small mammals will take place in Coole Park and Garryland Nature Reserve next week as part of Biodiversity Week, which runs from Saturday May 17 to Sunday May 25.

How many famous people lifted that heavy brass knocker on the door of Lady Augusta Gregory’s home at Coole, Co Galway, and gave it a resounding rat- a -tat -tat? It resounded again last weekend with all the authority of a grumpy judge’s gavel. The writer and broadcaster John Quinn, chairman of the 19th Autumn Gathering, used it to great effect to keep speakers to their time, and to summon people to the next event.

In September 2004 Seamus Heaney opened the Autumn Gathering in Gort, and he read the above poem (which I will conclude in a moment), and told the audience that he was happy to be once again in south Galway. “ To drive across Ireland, east to west, towards Padraic Fallon’s native Galway, is to experience a double sensation of refreshment and déja-vu. The refreshment comes from the big lift of the sky beyond the River Shannon, the déja-vu from entering a landscape which has been familiar for a century as an image of the dream Ireland invented by the Irish Literary Revival.’
